{How to} Make bias binding…

On my recent work for Crafty magazine I make my own bias binding. Here it’s a step by step tutorial for it.
  • Cut 2.5” strips of fabrics on a 45 degree angle (Bias)
  • To connect the strips, place the strips into 90 degree angle. One horizontally and the  other vertically, right sides together. Sew diagonally across. Backstitch to secure both ends. Trim the ends. It will be a continues strip. Press the seam open.
  • Fold and press the strip half way. That will create a crease in the middle.
  • Open the strip and fold the sides to met at the crease in the middle.
Hurray, you made your own bias…

I like this method of making bias tape, in the sewaholic Tofino pattern there is a template so all you need to do is sew the rectangle together, press and cut (the cutting takes the longest time!)

I often make bias binding out of left-over scraps after cutting out the main pieces. It’s more economical since I don’t have to buy as much fabric so this method is good for that.

  • Thank you for this! I make it from time to time but usually wing it. Love having a set of instructions to follow.
