I was reading this article by MAN REPELLER when this sentence caught my attention:” why are our clothes even given girls’ names?”. I couldn’t refrain from thinking about it from the context of sewing. How ‘we as consumer’ behave similarly. That independently of buying ready made clothes or buying the prospect of clothes (materials, fabric, patterns etc) we subconsciously engage to a similar experience. Girls Names are a lot more seductive than numbers or descriptions.
In the article the author associate the reasons of clothes having girl’s name as following:
Personal positive association with the name in question. Your name, a dear friends, someone famous etc.
A signal of mutual admiration: Jane Birkin= Birkin bag; Princess Grace Kelly = Kelly Bag etc.
Building on previous experiences i.e consistency of fit and material as patterns and colors change over seasons.
Gender specific: A phenomena only seen in Women’s closet. Men’s clothes are based on item descriptions.
The concluding argument relay the author’s theory that retailers usually select the most popular names so majority of population would snap up it without hesitation.
Do you find yourself reading articles completely unrelated to sewing but finding yourself taking that information in the context of the sewing industry? Do share your thoughts!
